There is a local tradition of a monastic settlement in Monkstown since the 9th century.
The Castle was constructed in the 13th century and was expanded over centuries.
It was built by the monks of the great Cistercian house of the blessed Virgin Mary to protect the valuable agricultural land and
fisheries they had established in the area.
Please remember that this is an outdoor event and suitable footwear is essential.
Monkstown Castle is not wheelchair accessible. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
