Time 12pm to 2pm

The "synchronised sailing" format for The Grand Classic Parade of Sail is simple but has never previously been practised in Dún Laoghaire.

It is designed to introduce the sailing craft to the pier walkers, who otherwise only see vessels sail out the harbour to distant marks.

The one design yachts and dinghies will gather as each class in tight groups to sail past the Bandstand on the East Pier where Hal Sisk will give a commentary describing each class probably at 5 minute intervals.

The craft will then sail out the harbour, past the back of the East Pier, over to the Roger Casement statue, and then towards the Martello Tower at Sandycove.

They will return to the harbour to provide a great spectacle.

Dún Laoghaire is known not just yacht racing but has a greater claim to fame as the Birthplace of the Worldwide Sport of Amateur Sailing.

The determining yardstick for participation in the event is that the design of the craft must be older than 50 years.

Anticipated participation is for a mixed fleet of approx. 50 craft which after the Bandstand sailpast should return by 2pm.

Dinghies: Lasers, IDRA 14s, Fireballs, 2.4metres, Water Wags, Mermaids, Mirrors.

Keelboats: Dragons, Glens, Squibs, DBSC 21 Footers.

Individual "Classic Yachts": Pamina, Marian Maid, Marguerite, 2 Kerrys, Periwinkle and a few others.

Thus although many craft will be "modern", newly built of fibreglass or wood, the designs are  surprisingly vintage.
